Desktop Wireless Access Point Information

Desktop Wireless Access Point FAQs

What is a desktop wireless access point?
A desktop wireless access point is a leased desktop device which connects to an active, 100Mbps data NAM. It broadcasts campus wireless services which offer Moobilenet, Moobilenetx, and Eduroam.
How much does it cost?
The desktop wireless access point will be installed by a Communications Resources (CR) field technician for a one-time fee of $60.50, and leased from CR for $8 per month.
Does a desktop wireless access point require a power source?
It is important to remember that the placement of a desktop wireless access point must be near a data NAM, but most likely will not require a power source.
Does a desktop wireless access point support Power over Ethernet (PoE)?
The desktop wireless access point does support PoE. If PoE is not available, a standard wall outlet will work fine.
Will a desktop wireless access point work on any data NAM?
No, in order for a desktop wireless access point to operate properly and provide reasonable wireless service to the surrounding area, it must be converted to a data NAM with a minimum throughput of 100Mbps. Using a NAM with slower speeds would not allow the unit to provide adequate service to wireless users. The speed of your NAM will be checked during the order process.
Can I move a desktop wireless access point around the office?
While a desktop wireless access point is portable, it is not mobile. It will only work on specifically configured NAMs. You should not unplug a desktop wireless access point from your data NAM, as this will cause all devices using the wireless service to lose connectivity.
What do I do if I have a problem with a desktop wireless access point?
Each desktop wireless access point has a sticker on the side that provides contact information for repairs. Since a desktop wireless access point is leased from CR, you are advised to call IT Express (530-754-HELP [4357]) to open a ticket for any service related issues. Your ticket may be routed to the Network Operations Center (NOC) or result in the dispatch of a maintenance technician for futher diagnosis.
What happens if a desktop wireless access point is damaged?
The desktop wireless access point is owned and maintained by CR as part of the campus wireless network. Should the device be lost, stolen, or damaged due to negligence, the department will be billed the full replacement value of the unit. Currently, that cost is $400 per device.
